Maison Rivière

Our story

A handful of rooms in an old stone house above the river.

Sunlight across the breakfast table in the walled garden

A wine grower built the house in the 1800s. Our grandparents lived here. They took in their first guests by accident, in 1961, when the road flooded and two travellers were stuck for a week.

Little has changed since. We grow vegetables in the walled garden. We light the fires in October. There are only a handful of rooms, few enough that we still cook for everyone ourselves.

What has changed is who turns up. Guests come from Tokyo, from São Paulo, from cities we have never seen. So the house speaks more than one language now. So does this website.
